I WILL NOT RELEASE YOU

Judging from the overall aesthetic visually and ear-wise, I'm going ahead and assuming Dem Hunger/Wanda Group has a new daughter project named Samantha Fiat. She has a Soundcloud with four tracks on it to stream. Below are the two I like the most, both sounding very little like either Dem Hunger or Wanda Group (or The Hers or Ahora Controller, etc), save the broken-down hiss and shrill feedback. The first track is a drippy house-pulser, the second a space-age driftpiece.

TANGENTS REQUEST #025

SO I figured I'd drop a message before this week's request. Just wanted to remind y'all that I now host a radio program on Newtown Radio called Friendship Bracelet Radio. The show airs Wednesday evenings (LIKE THIS EVENING) from 6-8PM EST. Stream from newtownradio.com. Every week for the past who knows how many weeks, Marissa A. Ross (Tangents & The Times) has requested a song to be played on the radio show I have been a part of at the time. Here's what she wants to hear this week:

So, I totally slept on this, which apparently came out in September or something? Where was I? I should have been on top of Electric Sunset's every move considering how devastated I was about the dissolution of Desolation Wilderness. I mean, I had "Soda" but then I guess I just forgot? I don't know. I don't have any legitimate excuses for myself. Whatever. Okay, so I've been totally jamming on this album this week. It has all the synthy vibes that are prevalent right now but, it's a lot poppier I think. It's so chill yet so melodic & upbeat. It's like, chill-pop. That's what I'm deciding. I really have no qualifications to be making up genres, but whatever, lol. Like that's ever stopped me! This is the blogosphere, where people who have no business talking about things, come to talk about things! Especially things they don't have business talking about! LOL! Alright, so I may not have the jurisdiction to carve out new niches but chill-pop or not, today I'm requesting Electric Sunset's "Last Night On Earth". I can't tell you how perfect it is to listen to while driving to work, three bong rips deep, under a perfectly clear blue sky. On that note... hm, yeah, I should probably get to work now.

NO MORE BEES

AyGeeTee (formerly AGT) is stupid prolific, dropping new bits of glitched rhythm music into his Soundcloud on a close-to-weekly basis. His most recent offering is sort of two offerings, in the form of "No Bees" and "No More Bees." The former is a swarming study in build and decay, layers upon layers stacked on top of each other for about four and a half minutes until the beat is perched perfectly on its proper resting point. In his words, the latter is "components of the first taken out so you can hear em," making for a completely different experience without the former's density. I think I prefer the spaced-out ambience of "No More Bees," real space shuttle no gravity vibes.

Press play on a couple more Soundcloud streamers below. I highly recommend "Washed Away/Washed Away" in addition to the two newest tracks. Also, check out all the other stuff I've posted about him.

ARCHITEUTHIS REX

Here's a ten-minute piece of rumbling jungle drones from Architeuthis Rex. Sort of sounds like matter decomposing into soil, which makes me think of Oscar McClure and his Compost tape. Not just any decomposing though - sped up and chaotic decomposing, with beetles and worms and pig carcasses and thick fog and natives. Also sort of reminds me of High Wolf later on.

Check out this sample from Architeuthis Rex's Foam cassette then buy one from My Dance The Skull.

DREAM DRUNK

First heard Dream Drunk over at Don't Die Wondering a few weeks ago when I was at a stupid Starbucks in Manhattan cos my internet at my apartment was down. The track posted over there was "ACIDZ" which I guess used a sample of Richard Pryor telling his story about acid ("took me five years to come down off of that shit") with weird electronic zips and whizzes backing it. This idea is fine, nothing wrong with beefing up a classic story of some dork-zone white dude giving Richard Pryor acid before he goes to a party or something.

However, the rest of his pay-what-you-want album Yksnyzorots is a bit weirder - track volumes fluctuate, causing loud bursts of sound at the beginning of songs after you've turned up your computer speaker volume a bit. There's no real songs, more like schizophrenic mood pieces for the most out-there sci-fi films ever created. Or strange experiments with buzzing musical/sequential devices by a non-musician. It's not entirely electronic - we find bits and pieces of acoustic strumming among the off-putting electric spasms and samples. There is no continuity and little similarity between all 16 tracks, making for a truly strange study in discomfort.

An example: the song "Have You Ever Been Sleeping...?" sounds like when you're listening to iTunes and some other window pops up and makes sounds and you get confused til you close that other window, except there's a ton of windows and you can't close them. Samples include Jimi Hendrix, Panda Bear, Ducktails, Passion Pit... yeah, I'm confused too. Oh, and then the following track is a take on "Regulate" if you weren't through with digesting pop culture blenderized.

Check out a few samples that rose to the top once boiled down, and if this whole thing intrigues you check the bandcamp.

SHINY LEATHER J REMIX

AyGeeTee (formerly AGT) recently remixed Lacc Fork's "Shiny Leather J" from his Fleet Swing EP. The original 96-second track seems like just a blip compared to the 8.5-minute-plus of the rework, which kind of revs up for a few minutes, dissipates, then really kicks in right around the seven-minute mark.

Check the remix, then the original, and watch out for some sort of cassette release from AyGeeTee soon on Sweat Lodge Guru.

HUNGRY HORSE

Last week I posted this reaction/primer to Dro Carey, sort of amazed at the bulk of material crammed in his tumblr. Since then I've spent a bit more time with certain pieces, increasingly wound up by his warped takes on Top 40 sugar and original mixes darker than city-lights will permit.

"Hungry Horse" is sort of a combination of the two, the foreground propelled by an unintelligible pitched-up vocal clip while deeper layers peel back to reveal corridors of shackles used to hold back the bass of some slobbering, grunting, asthma-breathing monster. If this beast was once the titular horse, it has since been transformed into something terrifying, some experimental gene-splicing gone wrong. It is forever hungry, ready to sniff out and devour everything and anything thrown its way - warriors, women, raw shanks, giant bones.

IN AN ARENA

If you're like me, you can't buy records. So when a highly anticipated full album stream is made available, you freak out. This is the case with Teengirl Fantasy's 7AM, out now on True Panther/Merok.

Recently Fact Magazine brought these streams into the world at their Soundcloud, so big ups to them. I've been following Teengirl Fantasy for a while now, from their CDR I picked up at a show at Vassar College in early 2009 to their TGIF EP to their Hollywood Hills EP and beyond. I most recently caught them at Glasslands, where they were killer:

Anyway, the full-length has been doin me right for the past week or so. Check out my favorites from the record by streaming the whole thing at Soundcloud (I suggest "In An Arena," "Make The Move," and "Dancing In Slow Motion"), watch the Iasos-directed video for "Cheaters" and if you're rollin in doubloons, throw some at True Panther (if you're in the U.S.) or Merok (if you're in Europe).

VAMOS

Branches sent over this new-ish jam "Vamos" the other day, recorded in August and never released. This one comes on the tail of "Salão Flamingo," from Triple You Tapes' SUUUMMUUUR SAMPLUUUR. "Vamos" is a bit subdued compared to some of his other material, which usually sways between the sounds of Summer pop music and psychedelic guitar meditations. This new one, however, lays low to the floor, drowning in something hot and viscous that reminds me of High Wolf.

TANGENTS REQUEST #008

This song takes me somewhere between the forest and the sea floor, a dream of tiny rising bubbles & falling orange leaves. Fluid & full, it's hard not to sink wholeheartedly into its reverie. I wish I could make some poetic & completely unpolitical Martha Rosler-ian photo-montage that would involve Meg Ryan as Pam Courson, dancing on those sand dunes, you know like right outta that Oliver Stone flick but then there would be a beautiful ocean and tons of trees. I hope you can picture that cause it's like DAMMMNNN. Mad poetic. I want that for my wall. Think I'm going to make it and open an Etsy shop. Yep, ahhhh, let me just scribble that in on my "Unactualized Drunk Aspirations" list.

Side note: Yo, "unactualized" may or may not be a word. I think it should qualify as a word but as a college dropout, I really don't have any authority on the matter. The issue is mostly problematic though because my computer doesn't recognize it as a word & Dictionary.com does not recognize it, yet, it does have synonyms on Thesaurus.com which I feel constitutes "unactualized" as an actual word.

I THINK I LOVE U

Been sleepin on the Russian Lapti since Leaving Records chipped off a lil piece from one of his "hallucinogenic ice sculptures" back in late 2009. Seems like dude's been hard at work since then, churning out some fly remixes as well as some atmospheric original work.

Leaving said it was releasing a 7" of Lapti's music back in December, but that hasn't happened yet. Stay in-tune with his Soundcloud.

BRONZED

I've posted about AGT a couple times in the past month. Dude alerted me to a new track on his Soundcloud page, "Bronzed," which sees him playing a bit of guitar over the stuttering grooves I'm used to.

Bronzed by AyGeeTee

On the other side of the AGT spectrum lies "Corinne Daze," more subdued and spaced out length-wise and content-wise. AGT proves he can use dense sonic landscapes, blips and ticks to craft both engaging, danceable pieces and more textural, ambient sections.

FOUND IN CELL

The still-fairly-mysterious Ryan Daniels sent over his Bandcamp page today, which includes one unheard track "Sea Ride" plus the MP3 of the sound from a video I posted towards the end of August called "Found In Cell."

Both pieces are shrouded in ethereal gauze, seems to be cut from the same lacy fabric as Dolphins Into the Future.

Thanks to Robert Robinson from Sore Eros for the initial tip on this guy. Apparently Daniels, Robinson and Gary War used to jam out together before sort of losing touch with Daniels ("he kind of dissapeared"), who intermittently sends recordings to Robinson ("sometimes he makes sweet tunes and sends them to me").

TANGENTS REQUEST #007

So maybe by now you've figured out my tenure on Sesame Street Bandaids has ended. This doesn't mean you shouldn't still tune into DJ Darmok's show, still on WMUA Mondays 6:30-8PM EST.

This also doesn't mean this weekly request segment's gotta end and good thing it didn't -- Robin Ward is the jam.

Damn guys, where did summer go? I feel like it's just beginning and suddenly it's Labor Day! Don't get me wrong, I live for holidays & long weekends but Labor Day just sentimentally signifies the end of summer, ya know? Time to trade Slip 'N Slides in for books & shit. Woof. I wish I could smell like chlorine all the time, but in the good way. Like in the "Ohhh, I conveniently have nothing to do other than have fun outdoors & swim all day because I have as much responsibility as a nine year old!" way. Man, I wish someone had told me I was livin' the dream in fifth grade. I mean, I think my parents alluded to it from time to time but I didn't ACTUALLY think I was going to peak in elementary school.

I'm digressin'... anyway, with or without running through sprinklers, I still had a really great summer!!! And if I wasn't so tired from celebrating all weekend, I'd tell you about it. But we're watching Top Gun & like, the bro volleyball scene is almost on, sooo...

INFINITE LOVE

I first heard of Dustin Wong from his playing in (the now defunct) Ponytail. Honestly, never listened to much Ecstatic Sunshine, but what they say is true - Wong's current solo material leans more towards the latter's aesthetic.

"Talking Walking Cloud," the first 'single' from Wong's new solo album Infinite Love, is a prime example. Guitars evolve from humble beginnings and build layer upon layer on top of each other, turning a simple guitar into an an entire orchestra a la this John Fahey quote:

"I was playing guitar but I heard an orchestra in my head."

is out October 5 on Thrill Jockey. Also of note -- that video is just a preview of an ENTIRE ALBUM MUSIC VIDEO created by Wong himself.
