FRIENDSHIP BRACELET PRESENTS...

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #6 - TONSTARTSSBANDHT

The sixth edition of Friendship Bracelet's Friendship Club has been floating around for a bit now, finally receiving proper attention to post up. Edwin from Tonstartssbandht/DŒS ARE sent over this mix a while ago. It's actually recorded from the radio, a set he played on his CKUT 90.3FM show on February 2. Huge mix of weird pop transmissions including some of his own music, his label's music and side project music.

The band is currently mixing their new full-length, which doesn't have a release date or label yet. Their two albums from last year, An When and Dick Nights, were both on high rotation around here and I had the pleasure of featuring a demo version of their song "Black Country" on Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 2. Edwin is also currently working on a new solo tape.

DŒS ARE recently released Cool World's Gaydream Nation, which I must say is great. You can check some demos from that HERE and some new versions/new tracks HERE.

BEACH BOY

Earlier this month I posted up a track from Buffalo Moon called "Poolside Dreaming," mentioning how the weather had finally decided to turn into Spring in Western Massachusetts. Though that glimmer of hope faded fast (it even snowed yesterday), May hits us very soon. However, we need a little more oomph to really drive it home.

Cue the last song on Buffalo Moon's Wetsuit tape, "Beach Boy." This track almost seems to be separate from the rest of the cassette, a classic pop gem among the sounds influenced by South American psychedelia. Have you been swooning over that new Best Coast song? Want to rot your teeth on some more super sugar? Don't know where to turn? Look no further.

All signs point to Moon Glyph still having copies of the tape, so peep this new sample, grab your copy of Wetsuit HERE and stay tuned for their upcoming 7" and an all-covers album this fall.

MEDICINE GIRLS

Tom Helgerson makes music as Shahs. I gushed over his song "Handreader" from the Divine Interest EP all last Summer (enough so that I asked him to contribute to FBC Volume 1). He has a new 7" out soon on an undisclosed label (EDIT: it's Death By Audio) and some human who wishes to remain anonymous handed me two new tracks to check out.

"Medicine Girls" is one of these, all slick like a trunk-carved boat through freshwater jungle paths. Feel it for yourself below and if it's not snowing where you are take a trip way back to JULY09 for a "Handreader" reunion a.k.a. reminder to myself that I still dig.

Here's another track from day\\s, perhaps a bit more fleshed out than the other two I posted a couple weeks ago (this one has vocals).

DAPHNIS & CHLOÉ

This was in my inbox today (not just my inbox, bunch of other blog dudes' inboxes as well so this ain't exclusive or nothin). It is a free EP from Daphnis & Chloé called King Harbor - Riptide. His Myspace page was created today. Daphnis & Chloé is a student named Mehdi residing in Besançon, France.

I'm more into the "Riptide" side of things. Sounds less like machines.

DEEP AS LOVE

So a couple weeks ago, for whatever reason (bored at work), I suggested my #1 radio fan/requestor clean up a Lisa Frank-inspired mix she had made in response to previous prodding. I'm glad I feigned toughness and jerkiness because she did in fact produce a splendid mix of cute pop candy. It's great, you should check it out.

Anyway, the grounds of the suggestion were basically that I would put forth a counter-mix to end all fake-mix-beefs. This gave me good reason to dust off like 55% of a mix I had fooled around with months before but neglected, leaving it to collect dust and wonder if it would ever be tampered with again. Finally, after way too long, these songs have been arranged just right.

There's no real single source for this mix's inspiration -- one part early MTV memories, one part DJ Darmok vibes, one part escapism into a dream world where one can be as smooth as their wildest dreams paint them. But most of all the mix stands in response to all the girly pop found on the all-female-fronted Lisa Frank mix. While a bunch of those older songs seem to be lost in some vintage void where wives and girlfriends wait patiently for their husbands and boyfriends to return from a day on the job, the songs found here are songs performed by men, or groups of men, with the sole purpose of selling records to these same swooning women.

The decades have changed, but the same sentiment rings true - the consumer wants to hear a pop song that affords them the opportunity to imagine what it'd be like, even if just for the duration of the tune, to be the one who these songs were written for. Heterosexual men (primarily) want to imagine The Angels are singing about them when they harmonize like "ba-ba-ba-oooh" just like men fantasize about what it'd be like to be one of those male models in a golden age Mariah Carey/Janet Jackson video that they're fretting over/falling for.

The songs on this mix take on the other end of the binary, providing pop fantasy fodder for (primarily) heterosexual women to gush over. What if my body was the body that was calling to R Kelly? What if Silk wanted to freak me? What if Roger Troutman wanted to be my man?

Marketing ploys aside, these songs provide a very, very small peek into some of my favorite R&B/soul songs from the late 70s to the mid 90s. There's some truly sensual excursions into soul, enough R&B cheese to rot your teeth and tons of blood-boiling sexual imagery (obviously).

It is with a strange amount of pleasure that Friendship Bracelet presense Deep as Love: A Mix for Midnite. Turn down the lights and shut the blinds - it's going to be a long nite.

WMUA SPRING VINYL SALE

WMUA radio is proud to present their annual (or biannual?) vinyl sale Sunday April 25 from 11AM-5PM at the Cape Cod Lounge in the Student Union building on UMass Amherst campus. There will be at least 20 local and regional dealers in attendance pushing tons of records, so make sure to stop by early and start diggin to ease that deep Sunday morning hangover.

What's even more exciting is that WMUA DJs will be spinning records all day long, including myself. I will be playing some jams around 3PM to soundtrack your possibly picked-over browsing, sandwiched between an allstar line-up of WMUA faithful -- Glenn Seigel, host of Jazz in Silhouette, is on right before me and Alex Hornbeck, host of Strange Light, will follow my set. Proud to be in the middle of such esteemed company.

I have also been asked to join some WMUA DJs at Diva's Nightclub in Northampton Thursday May 6, where we are apparently starting a monthly WMUA DJ nite. I'll be joining DJ Darmok, Studebaker Hawk and Andujar to spin house, funk and disco alllll nite long. Shit pops off at 10PM so get your gayclub on WITH US.

POOL CRAMP

I have seen and heard Patrick Clifford sort of reluctantly telling people about his Color Rabbit project at least twice while waiting between sets at house shows in Northampton. One night I specifically remember him having a hard time describing his music to someone who kept giving him the "yeah yeah okay" nod. Soon after, I found his Awarenessness CDR in the experimental stacks at WMUA and eventually he sent me some more music.

"The Womb Experience" is one of those tracks, a thick collage of ambient vibrations. I guess the easy out would be to call it womb-like, warmth pumping in and out of the track's four minutes like some time-lapse proliferation of green life. However, the track never seems to birth anything. Instead, the piece recalls gestation, every small tick and flit necessary for the final organism to be born naturally. Sort of like waiting for your lunch to digest before jumping into the pool, but with graver consequences.

Check out the track below, stream a bunch on Myspace and help the dude out by grabbing a tape or a CD-R from his blog. He also has another band I don't know anything about so maybe you'll hear bout that business soon.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #5 - PERDIZES DREAM

It's been a bit of a delay, but here's the fifth edition of the Friendship Bracelet Friendship Club, curated by Brazilian label Perdizes Dream.

PD's Claudio got the name from the west-side neighborhood in São Paulo where he resides, Perdizes ("it's a little bit like Brooklyn in NYC"). The label has brought us two releases from Brazilian artists thus far, Babe, Terror's Weekend and the self-titled Buon Griorno Luamada album, with more to come very soon from those two acts. This mix is full of continents-spanning psych, all fantastic. In their own words:

"In a changing-dial (more than mixtape) way, I tried to show the synthesis and spirit of a very particular Brazilian "barroquedelia," developed by the Clube da Esquina "scene" of the state of Minas Gerais (Minas is something like the Brazilian mix of Wyoming and Pennsylvania) in the 70's, and detect links between those sounds and other stuff. Like "classic" (which is in fact very modern in my view) collective/psychedelic rock made, mostly, in Scandinavia nowadays, Guilherme Arantes (who's a genius, our perfect mix of Todd Rundgren, Tony Banks, Billy Joel and Cole Porter, the greatest composer of Brazilian "X" and untold history -- he was born/ raised in São Paulo, near Perdizes), Italian prog, etc."

LUSH COLA

Tim Perry from Weed Diamond also makes music as Lush Cola. I met Tim and the other Weed Diamonders in Austin. One night we slept in the same parking lot and they introduced me to a different sort of carbonated beverage, watermelon flavored Four Loko, which they happen to rave about here. Thanks guys.

According to the label, these songs are like a whole bunch of various things:

"They are driving a Gun-Metal Black Lincoln Continental on the interstate at night
They are riding your bike in a rainstorm when the lightning comes out
They are trying to fall asleep early on a weeknight"

I have never done the first thing and I haven't done either of the second two in quite some time but I'll take their word for it. These pieces aren't as much songs like their Weed Diamond cousins, instead they pass by as ethereal drones, each touching on a separate pleasant mood and riding it out.

In that Fader Fort interview, the band talks about wanting to see The xx at SXSW. This album sort of reminds me of an even more low-key/less bored xx that stays away from songs and sticks to exploring specific moods and is not wrapped up in any zany 'goth' connotations and fashion.

In "Squeeze Your Love Out For Me," the vocal harmonies belong in a stained glass church. They make it a point to take their time, easing along with lazy drum machine clicks. "Teaching a Bull How to Sit and Stay Sitting" adds warm washes of guitar, contrasting with the cold thud of the drum sounds. I especially dig "Cola," where some progression exists and the beat builds over five minutes, not necessarily more rewarding than other tracks but perhaps the most exciting.

These Lush Cola jams are available from Patient Sounds for FREE DOWNLOAD (along with all their other releases) OR on tape for $7 OR if you act fast you can treat yourself to their BUNDLE OFFER of one each of their five tapes for $30, shipping included (until they sell their last Smelly Magic tape, then it'll be 4 tapes for $25, shipping included).

FUCK THIS WORLD

I imagine seeing Speculator play in a living room (EDIT: okay FINE it's a kitchen) would be much different than seeing him play outside of doors like I did in Austin at the UP Ranch and Karibu. Here's a blue/purple/orange sunset video of Nick playing "Fuck This World" in one such environment last week (Cat Palace, San Francisco), shot by Andrew Creighton for Blood Drank Magazine.

HERBCRAFT

Herbcraft was on the bill at the Taterbug + Tracey Trance show at King Street Mansion last week. I hadn't heard of the project before, and for good reason - it was literally his first show playing out Herbcraft songs live for people.

The project is a solo venture (with a friend's help live) for Matt from Cursillistas. He's from Portland (Maine) and traveled down for the show since he loves Western Mass so much ("Northampton/Amherst is definitely one of my favorite spots in the world that I've seen in my short life"). I caught him play with Cursillistas in the same living room within the past year and I enjoyed the set, but Herbcraft was something a bit different.

Smoldering guitars played back from his looping pedal as he shredded over them, slowly burrowing into stoned ears and Narragansett minds. And I do mean stoned - stoned enough to warrant Charles Taterbug himself to refer to Herbcraft as "such stoners," which is saying something seeing as he was showing off a tattoo on his arm that reads "so what I'm far out."

Currently, Matt only has a few Sa tapes dubbed (J-card directly above), but the Herbcraft Discovers The Bitter Water Of Agartha LP drops at the end of May on Hello Sunshine Records. The Sa tape (measly $3) contains a few tracks from that record plus outtakes on the b-side. Matt said the album was the product of a Cursillistas hiatus and his long-time love for "the kind of music that I spend most of my time listening to: the late-60s early-70s Bay Area freak bands, obscure private press psych-rock records, krautrock, classic rock, etc."

Check out the first download from the LP below, "Road to Agartha," stream another from his Soundcloud page and keep an eye and an ear out for the record dropping within the next couple months on Hello Sunshine.

FRIENDSHIP BRACELET CLUB VOLUME 4

I am pleased to present to you Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 4, the end of the first year's cycle of quarterly FBC compilations. However, it's not much of an end to anything -- all signs point to starting a new season this Summer so kick back, enjoy this one and reminisce with the previous three volumes here, here and here.

As with the two previous compilations, Volume 4 will be available in a physical format as well as the free digital download available below. The difference between this one and the past couple will be the format, Volume 4 being dubbed to cassette tape as opposed to burned to CDR. The switch-up reflects a collaboration with Olympia's Wild Animal Kingdom Records, who asked me a few months ago to curate the April edition of their excellent Monthly Mixtape Club. April happened to coincide with the next month in line to release a comp, so my submission featured selections from FBC4 mixed down into two 19-20 minute sides.

Since the tapes would normally only be available to MMTC's 40 or so subscribers, I decided to make some very similar tapes available for purchase through these pages, acting as the physical copy of the comp. The audio will be the same, the package as follows:

1 solid white cassette tape with mixed media collage
1 printed J-card, hand-stamped on the back with the tracklist
1 linoleum print by Gnarfield (details on this and the identity of Gnarfield are on the way)
all snapped up in a unique soft plastic case

As always, these objects are unnumbered, potentially unlimited and are meant to be shared so buy a tape and dub a copy of the tape for your friend with your own inserts included and tell them to do the same for someone else. REMEMBER -- the music is FREE, the complete packaged object costs $5. Click the Paypal link below to pre-order your copy (sample images available shortly), which will start shipping by the end of the month. Also since MMTC only allows for a c40-length mixtape, the digital version of FBC4 will be presented with bonus tracks and re-vamped tracklisting.

FRIENDSHIP BRACELET CLUB VOLUME 4

1. RxRy - Aoen Eyseai Flouors (Demo). While the identity of one RxRy was sort of revealed at SXSW, his sounds remain mysterious -- paced glacially and shrouded in extra-terrestrial hums, it's no wonder why the dude refers to his sound as "DROWNSTEP." This is a micro-genre I am okay with.

2. matthewdavid - Desert Moon. Technically this was the first track I received for this edition of The Club. Recently I was sent a revamped version, much more crisp and just as wobbly. If you aren't up on him, he runs LA-based Leaving Records (Dak, Ras G, Dem Hunger, etc), works for Alpha Pup Records and is associated with dublab.

3. SiFunk & Garmunkle - Pixelated Marshmellow. These dudes are out of New York and help run the Astro-Nautico blog/label with Kuhn. They had this to say:

"we're not really sure what to make of it. some kindergarten recess theme song or melted ice cream on the pavement."

4. Mane Mane - Hidden Dap. More blap goop from the two Manes C Powers and heRobust. Chris says "Hidden Dap is the party blunt mane." I cannot agree more.

5. Persona La Ave - Backroads. Downtempo warps from the upcoming Brothers tape, which is shaping up to be very cool. Stay tuned for more information on that in the coming month(s).

6. Luke Perry - Phone Freak. Rad jammer from Luke's new Brainwave's Rerun Crunch album which I don't think has been released yet but should be soon. This one sparkles then hits some Rangers riff then shoots off to the stars only to get slimed with Gak.

7. Nowa Huta - Antlers. From London. On Tri Angle Records. Riverdance clapstomps for all you dark-core whatever the fuck they call its.

8. How To Dress Well - Can't See My Own Face. The sound of your airbag deploying in slow-motion. The impact is horrendous - everyone dies but you, the driver. Will appear on the new The Eternal Love 2 EP, droppin real soon.

9. Chat Room - BMX to Karate Lessons, BMX to Freedom. A song was written that references riding your bike to Market Hotel with a backpack full of PBRs. I don't live in Brooklyn (and I don't know how much longer Market Hotel will continue operations..) but I can't even imagine how many dudes do this regularly. Get off your fixed gear bullshit and HIT SOME GOD DAMN JUMPS.

10. Happy Family - Youtube. This is only the sixth Happy Family song I've ever heard, so I was happy to see Will send it over. I was even happier to hear it will be on an upcoming Wigflip Records compilation (details still brewing). Way pleasant branch sways as the tire-swing that's always been attached to it spins with you in the middle as a child. Ain't nothin wrong here.

11. heRobust - Half Fool. One half of Mane Mane also down with the sharpslaps. Burn this comp to CDR, blast it out your windows-down-Hyundai and turn it up when this comes on. The honeys will hear, I promise.

12. Inflatable Mattress - Karen's Dub Part 2. Dude's got a couple mixtapes down. Get into em. Quick lil reggae bouncer.

13. Mind Rippers - Heather & Donna. Luke Perry + CH-Rom + Nick from Speculator = Mind Rippers. Way more subdued than the other couple songs I've heard, in a good way.

14. Tangles - Cruisin. Sort of sounds like a mix between Mark McGuire and Pure Ecstasy. Way lazy, probably would be good to listen to in the Summer while laying in medium-length grass that has been tended to properly.

DAKOTA BOSSANOVA

Damn, I love it when a single tweet opens up a can of worms. Minneapolis via South Dakota/South America five-piece Buffalo Moon just dropped their Wetsuit tape on Moon Glyph. I'll pass it off to the label to describe what's going on:

"With four of its five members hailing from South Dakota, the bossanova/light psych sound made by the Buffalo Moon would be one wicked curveball even in this epoch of transculturalism. But when you discover that their guitarist/harpist/main vocalist, Karen Freire is originally from Ecuador, their superbly titled Wetsuit begins to make sense. That is not to say that the record isn't without its curveballs. You wouldn't find track names such as "Iowa's Got A New Strip Club" and "Money, Pussy, Weed" on an Astrud Gilberto album nor would expect such adept levels of musicianship, but its there in strokes. Wetsuit is in turns beachy and cosmopolitan, slyly experimental and a lot of fun."

Here's a sample from the tape, "Poolside Dreaming." If you're like me and live in the Northeastern corridor of the United States, you most likely understand how appropriate it is that this track/tape dropped today -- superbly sunny and immaculately slinky, shit should bring a smile to the face of all you fellow Twin Sister slobberers who are finally ready to walk outside without a jacket and see the months-long grey/brown turn to green.

Grab this free MP3 sample, check one more called "Jamba Samba" on their Myspace and for the love of Spring, ORDER THAT TAPE.
