FLEER ULTRA

So Stephen Bruner a.k.a. Thundercat is this berserk bass player who is something like Flying Lotus's protege and he also plays in Suicidal Tendencies (I know, right) and he has played on the last couple Erykah Badu records and he's all set to release his Flying Lotus-produced debut solo record The Golden Age Of Apocalypse through Brainfeeder (where else?) on August 30. The length of the album is a gorgeous blend of bubbling jazz fusion and soulful space age electronics, an essential listen for anyone who needs to just chill out and get a grip. The record's most serious soul bleeds through in his George Duke cover "For Love I Come," melting pants off during the song's sensual opening with mischievous bass fingerings then really picking up in the second half where the drummer kicks in. I wish I could share my favorite tracks with you ("Fleer Ultra" and "It Really Doesn't Matter To You" are a couple), but all the label is offering is the Duke cover so enjoy that and then buy the record next week.

SPECIALIST MORGEN J

It's been quite a while since I've posted about Specialist Morgen J, but his self-titled cassette is about to drop on Triple You Tapes. SMJ is Pittsburgh resident Kenny Rakatine. He likes wrestling and Lil Wayne and King of the Hill. No really, two of his new songs are "DDT" and "Souphanousinphone." Specialist Morgen J is full of downtempo synthesizer jams, a deep string of Cloud Rap instrumentals and drugged up club tracks stitched together with extended swaths of spectral ambience. Simply put, SMJ creates dark sounds - subterranean night music for land-dwellers and day-jobbers, a soundtrack to feeling out of bounds and uneasy without steady ground to clamp onto. Paypal links will be up tomorrow.

INNERCITY / DIAMOND CATALOG

NNA Tapes officially got into releasing vinyl records this past spring with the Magnified Palette 12" from Diamond Catalog, a.k.a. Hubbard, Oregon's Lala Conchita R. and Pat Maherr (a.k.a. DJ Yo Yo Dieting, a.k.a. Indignant Senility, etc). The duo craft a dark version of dance music blurred to obscurity behind chugging electronics and haunted whizzes of noise, crossing way more into danceable territories on this years record than on their last tape We Are 138BPM. NNA has offered up "Valveneration" for free download. Also check out the promotional video featuring an alternate version of album cut "Aries Vieweight."

Now NNA is set to release their second slice of vinyl, Innercity's "Dada Les Apocalypses" / "The Pyramids Of Northeast Belgium" 7" on August 29. Innercity is Hans Dens from Belgium. He has releases on labels like Not Not Fun and Upstairs CDR, though I have heard none of his previous work. "The Pyramids Of Northeast Belgium" melds tinkling electronics, new age swells and distant house propulsion into a soothing yet alien take on mutant psychedelia.

PEAR PRESSURE

Cupp Cave has basically been killing it all year. Not that he's released a terribly large amount of tunes under the name, but everything I hear from the Belgian is gold. His Dice Pool EP, released by Vlek, boasted four Lone-leaning raver cuts. He masterfully remixed Holy Other's "Touch." He remixed fellow Belgian Dynooo's track "Espirit Sweat" for his recent Surf Kill full-length Vvideo Hair. He's got a pretty steady stream of Soundcloud uploads going, including dawnbreak jammer "Sun Tag," which he dropped "about 1 month ago."

Now Dynooo has returned the remix favor, taking on Cupp's "Pear Pressure," an outtake from Dice Pool that XLR8R posted back in May. The original is a solid weirdo rave tune, wouldn't be out of place on the EP. Dynooo's remix takes it to another level, upping the psychedelics and burying the track in partially confusing percussion jukes. Another Belgian Sagat also remixed one of Cupp's tracks, "Mind Bones," for Vlek Records as they celebrated Belgian National Day last month. Sagat has a 7" and an EP out on Vlek this fall.

MY NAFFEW RANDY

Only just heard of this Omar S. stuff from Altered Zones. Real solid house bits called High School Graffiti released as a free download by 'hip' car company Scion, possibly built for people like me who have an appreciation for cars and house music but don't know a terrible amount about cars or house music or their foundations/forefathers but also maybe it was just built as house music to listen to in cars and deep car heads and house music fans alike are fans of it as well. The world may never know.

Just kidding. Omar S. is a well-known Detroit house producer whose last full-length, 2005's Just Ask The Lonely, is a serious notch in the belt of psychedelic repetition music. He's also got a TON of other material on deck to check out, seemingly endless singles and EPs and vinyl and CDs from FXHE Records. Grab the Scion EP MP3s from DummyMag's handy Soundcloud embed down there and get psyched for his NEW full-length It Can Be Done, But Only I Can Do It, which appears to be available for purchase now. There's also a 12+ minute sampler featuring clips from all the album's cuts available from that last link and re-posted below.

PERFECT SKIES

Main Attrakionz - Perfect Skies (Produced by Friendzone) from friendzone on Vimeo.

New video for Main Attrakionz' "Perfect Skies" in which they hang out in luxurious foyers and libraries rapping straight into the camera or straight into something else while the camera focuses on them. Never realized how much gold was in their mouths. Not to be confused with "Perfect Sounds" from their fantastic debut studio album 808s & Dark Grapes II, out soon through Мишка. "Perfect Skies" does not appear on the second 808s, but it is available as a free two-track .zip file download from producers Friendzone. B-side "Chuch" is equally laid back, really nice stuff. Oh, and they're making their first ever NYC appearance August 26 at the New Museum so clear your early evening that day (7PM show, music has to be done by 9PM).

REMAND

I posted about London's Vinh Ngan recently. His whole EP is now available for stream on Soundcloud. Aym G 4 Life is dark, paranoid and intensely minimal. Even without a translation of Ngan's dead-flat Cantonese (translations allegedly coming soon), the tracks sound threatening and bleak. My favorite track is the more house-minded "Remand," the final and most involved track on the EP. It's also the only track you can download.

DIES IN 55

It's kind of really great when a band makes like two songs which are both really hot and then everyone likes them and then the band doesn't immediately vomit out a bunch of similar songs for some quickly thrashed together debut album on some subpar label that can't help them enough to actually be an awesome band but instead they let shit sift out, simmer for a couple years and find out exactly what they want to be doing. Sort of like Trailer Trash Tracys, who dropped some serious jams back in 2009 with "Strangling Good Guys" and "Candy Girl" and are now planning on releasing their debut album early next year on Double 6 / Domino. The first song to surface from the album is "Dies in 55," a fairly huge departure from those first couple Jesus and Mary Chain fuzz-gazers. This new one sounds like singer Suzanne Aztoria is being backed by spliff-high Beach Boy angels, which I guess ends up sounding a bit like Beach House but way better... which is weird cos none of the song reminds me of beaches at all. Anyway, check it out and sit tight for a bunch of months for the LP.

MOON GLYPH 2011 SAMPLER

So I'm listening to this Moon Glyph 2011 Sampler free download that the Minneapolis label sent over 1.5 weeks ago and I'm really enjoying the galactic synthesizer cuts, some serious space music perfect for 2:39 AM. What was most attractive to me about this comp was the thought of new FORMA material I hadn't heard ("FORMA 145A"), but the huge ten-minute Food Pyramid track "ATM" is rubbing me all nice in my weirdo ambient prog workout zone. Other highlights for me include an excerpt from a Lee Noble set on KXLU radio called "Tattooed Eyes In Jail" and a couple especially bizarre selections from Ghostband and Tender Meat. Download the whole thing HERE after you taste a few samples.

100% PURA ADRENALINA

Branches has a new video for a new song, "Maior é o Tombo," available as a free download from his bandcamp and as a part of 20 Anos de Ruptura Explosiva, an all-Portuguese tribute compilation to 1991 Keanu Reeves + Patrick Swayze flick Point Break. The video was edited by Branches using material from Homer Groening's 1964 short film A Study in Wet. Branches' Triple You Tapes release Primeira Vez is on the horizon and we'll have more information on that soon. Download the whole comp and click the its sick Keanu/Swayze album art below to make it big.

1:34 AM

1:34 am from LAM Music on Vimeo.

Got a random email from Yuri Katowskey, who I guess is one half of Moscow production duo Vladik, who is responsible for the above song and video. It's unclear whether this is one piece or a sampler of their forthcoming release, but the song and video for "1:34 AM" float around a sound that's gotten my iPod all hot this year, some mutant combination of wobbled-up Hype Williams bass ambience and decades old found-video fashion. According to the label, a full version of this song/release will be available in late August so catch a taste of Vladik and sit tight for more.
