I have yet to post anything in these pages about how Emilie Friedlander and Ric Leichtung are trying their damnedest to raise enough money to launch their new independent publication adhoc.fm, so today is the day. In case you didn't know, Emilie and Ric were the editors of the now-defunct Pitchfork Media project Altered Zones. They did a fantastic job managing all the contributors and getting shit done and it was a pleasure to work with them. I have been asked to contribute a column to the new venture and can't wait to flesh out the topic and start putting together some pieces for you all to enjoy.
Anyway, this is really just a last-ditch plea for you to dig deep in your pockets and pledge a few bucks to the creation of this independent outsider music publication. There's only five days to go, so get on it.
Homies Featureless Ghost and C Powers (who is now going by Cc) are about to embark on a miniature tour across the Southeast United States. If you live in or around Raleigh, Wilmington, Atlanta or Lexington I suggest you get up, get out and dance around while this killer live music happens in front of you. Not familiar with the jams? Check out some recent Soundcloud additions below, including FG's "Same-As-Before" remix of their own track "Web Walk" and a taste of that spicy new Cc.
The Dude Rezzie hinted at something amazing in the "New Encounters" section of his last post on Weird Magic. Jssst is a minimal techno freaker from Amsterdam. His Soundcloud is full of (mostly) downloadable material. Jssst dives into the dark and brooding side of trance-inducing dance music, drugging the listener/dancer with deep mechanical bludgeonings on repeat. Hard to place exactly what my favorite jams are here, sort of like it's hard to choose a favorite Raga from Charanjit Singh's Ten Ragas To a Disco Beat -- Jssst's cuts are all so euphoric and uplifting it's hard to care about one stopping when there's another right behind it.
Edwin White a.k.a. Eola will be rolling up to Western Massachusetts on December 1 to play a show at Flying Object with Jerry Paper (formerly Zonotope) and others to be announced. You ready?
New video for Main Attrakionz' "Perfect Skies" in which they hang out in luxurious foyers and libraries rapping straight into the camera or straight into something else while the camera focuses on them. Never realized how much gold was in their mouths. Not to be confused with "Perfect Sounds" from their fantastic debut studio album 808s & Dark Grapes II, out soon through Мишка. "Perfect Skies" does not appear on the second 808s, but it is available as a free two-track .zip file download from producers Friendzone. B-side "Chuch" is equally laid back, really nice stuff. Oh, and they're making their first ever NYC appearance August 26 at the New Museum so clear your early evening that day (7PM show, music has to be done by 9PM).
Hey there -- two new C Powers (a.k.a. Termeric, 1/2 Mane Mane, 1/3 Shrur/Shur) jammers just uploaded to Soundcloud a couple hours ago. I prefer the second of the two, "See Home," but "Slow Handed" is rad too, perhaps more along the lines of the chopped hip hop and funk that Powers has got us accustomed to. "See Home" rattles on for seven minutes, on the longish side for this project. Reminds me of another one of Powers' longer tracks, "Chunder 2" from his split with Yaaard. This guy's super clean and clubby. I like to imagine that every time one of those little cowbell percussions happens its a small man rapping on a glass with his fork, tryna get some attention except there's 40,000 others tryna do the same thing so that, together, they all sound rather nice and rhythmic. It's great as long as afterwords you don't recall that each and every one of their attention requests actually went unnoticed.
Dig? Well check it out -- C Powers will be making a few appearances in Brooklyn at the end of May with Atlanta brethren Featureless Ghost. Hard dates are Friday May 27 at 285 Kent and Saturday May 28 (FBUS PRESENTS...) with CH-Rom and Punks On Mars at Cameo Gallery. Stay tuned for more info about dates and new C Powers releases.
I helped book up a show Thursday at Cameo Gallery and I'll also be DJing in between sets. Should be real fun. Night Manager has some new music out soon on Fire Talk, Telenovelas have a split 7" with Colours out next month on Beach Blonde, Arches is in town from Philadelphia and Cool World are Orlando Does Are bros rollin' thru from Providence. Lineup and times and music samples below:
Woodsman and Tjutjuna, two of Denver's most psychedelic acts, are about to hit the road on a huge Spring tour from the Midwest to the Northeast then back down South and to Texas for the Austin Psych Fest before heading home. To fund this massive excursion and the van they're hoping to rent to carry them all that way, the bands have set up a Kickstarter project. With 13 days to go the project is about 75% funded, but the band still need your help with those last couple hundred bucks. Dig deep into those pockets and help out some really cool dudes - there's a lot of rad stuff in it for you if you pledge including records, tapes, guest list spots and exclusive downloads. If this wasn't enough, Tjutjuna has handed over a download of "Rise/Set" to share with all you potential pledgers out there. The track's a huge nine-minute onslaught of pounding drums and shimmering guitars that quickly bursts into sprawling fits of shredded noise. Check the Kickstarter video, download the "Rise/Set" MP3, get with it and kick a few dollars into these guys' pockets and check em out this April at a town near you.
Come check a huuuge show at Silent Barn tonite - Speculator, Melted Toys, Wet Dream, Punks On Mars (formerly Luke Perry) and Eola (Edwin from Tonstartssbandht). I'll be DJing before the show, in between sets, after the show, whenever you want. Shit starts around 9PM. $7. Be There.
Alright guys, Impose asked me and a bunch of dudes to help curate their big holiday party and it's today, Thursday December 9. Why did they ask me? Well, cos I've been doing little interview thangs for them for a bit if you didn't know. Anyway, it should be a fun time. Technically it's free, but we're suggesting a $5 donation, all of which will go to the bands so come out and get weird and support all the dudes and meet Drake and Josh from the hit Nickelodeon television program Drake & Josh.
D'EON is some weird combination of smooth house and middle eastern vibes, having totally bulked up his sound for his latest album Palinopsia, out now on Hippos in Tanks. There's hints of his ÆON tape in there, which I spoke on a while ago, but I'll go ahead and say the new material is more addictive and far superior as far as I've heard.
Velvet Davenport's Warmy Girls LP drops this Tuesday November 16 on Minneapolis psych label Moon Glyph. By some insane chance of luck (or real rad planning), Velvet Davenport will grace Brooklyn tonite and tomorrow nite with a couple really solid shows.
If there's somethin on here you don't approve of me having here please let me know cos I don't wanna hurt nobody. Downloads are for sampling purposes and if there's anything afoot iprnelson@gmail.com is where complaints be filed.
