Homies Featureless Ghost and C Powers (who is now going by Cc) are about to embark on a miniature tour across the Southeast United States. If you live in or around Raleigh, Wilmington, Atlanta or Lexington I suggest you get up, get out and dance around while this killer live music happens in front of you. Not familiar with the jams? Check out some recent Soundcloud additions below, including FG's "Same-As-Before" remix of their own track "Web Walk" and a taste of that spicy new Cc.

QUICKSAILS

(credit: iprnelson cellular telephone image)

Some of the most exciting ambient flutterings I've heard lately come from Chicago's Ben Billington a.k.a. Quicksails. I caught word of Ben through friends who were trying to land him a show in Western Massachusetts. They succeeded. His set at Flying Object was incredible and loud, blowing the lid off what I thought a Quicksails set might sound like. After learning that a Quicksails live set is much different from a Quicksails recording, Ben mentioned he had a cassette out on NNA Tapes that I didn't know about called A Fantasy in Seasons. You should buy one. No idea what Soundcloud tracks are from the tape (if any), but the homie Mary Katherine Youngblood posted "Walking Through Rain" for stream over at Visitation Rites.

FBC5 EXTENSION

I know, I KNOW. I said Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 5 would be available for preorder for TWO WEEKS ONLY before I took down the links. HOWEVER in that time some crazy things have happened and a couple things have changed.

As many of you know, there was a recent burglarizing and ransacking and general invasion plus destruction of amazing Ridgewood, Queens do-it-yourself live music venue The Silent Barn. In my time living in Brooklyn this was probably my favorite place to see music, hang out with cats, check the comics library, see bands play in front of a kitchen sink, conversate in the dark basement, chug down huge outside beers and be with friends. I've probably been there about a dozen times but after my first trip it was evident how special the space was and how much history and future it had. For these reasons, I really felt compelled to make a contribution to Silent Barn's Kickstarter campaign to get the space and all its residents back on their feet.

Unfortunately I have very little money so I can't give from my pocket, but what I can and will do is keep the FBC5 preorder open for JUST ONE MORE WEEK with 50% of all gross revenue from this week going to The Silent Barn (a.k.a. if you buy a tape for $5, I will donate $2.50 to the Silent Barn Kickstarter). If you were thinking about it before and let your chance pass you by, please do reconsider and help out a fantastic live music space while treating yourself to a tape of killer new tunes. Stream the comp from bandcamp (embedded below) then download the comp FOR FREE then check the different giving levels and make a contribution not only to the production of the FBC5 physical product but to The Silent Barn as well. Thanks!

REUNITED

Reunited from Leaving Records on Vimeo.

On July 26 Leaving Records will release SWEDISH FISH, a split cassette of ambient music from Odd Nosdam (co-founder Anticon Records) and LR guru Matthewdavid. Most of the A-side is "Swedish Tapes," a live recording of Odd Nosdam opening for Fennesz at San Francisco's Swedish-American Hall. The B-side is Matthewdavid's, featuring four extended droners including "Reunited," a wispy piece of mulched tape which has received Miko Revereza's psychedelic analog visual treatment. This time Revereza pairs the sounds with a rotating wheel of rainbow colors that'll make you start seeing things if you stare long enough. As with most all of Revereza's work we see him manipulating raw film, but this time he chose to forge the edit in real time along with the music, bringing the audio and the visual closer in a couple ways. For one, according to Revereza, Matthewdavid edits some of his dronier material in real time, analogous to how the visuals were created. Miko goes a step further, likening the open-ended nature of his abstract video feedback to ambient music in general. "Just like ambient music [the video] is not the kind of thing to make one feel happy or sad or to give an opinion," which allows viewers "to experience the film as an individual." Grab a tape next week from Leaving Records. In the meantime check a download of "Reunited" below.

N E S T

n e s t - smoke signals from miko revereza on Vimeo.

This morning Miko Revereza sent over "Smoke Signals," a new analog video/improvised sound art piece with visuals by Revereza and sound by n e s t, a collaboration between yuk. and Barefoot Shrubs. Like all of Revereza's work that we've featured here, he's using analog equipment to create abstract and psychedelic video edits, this time featuring ten minutes of movement in shades of white and grey. We see images reminiscent of electron microscopes zoomed in on hair follicles ten million times, obscured by spotlights on spectral glow. The accompanying soundtrack by n e s t is an extended ambient jam that suits the video perfectly, a bit less chaotic than previous works printed in these pages by Barefoot Shrubs' predecessor Dejenga Elo (see post) and devoid of slapped beats like some of yuk.'s other stuff (see: a d w a, his Leaving Records release + his Mane Mane remix). Miko said the video's really close to him so find ten minutes during which you won't be distracted and enjoy it for real.

RONKONKOMA

Dummy Mag posted this 'new' Soundcloud download/streamer from Hype Williams yesterday, an extended live piece recorded late last year in Ronkonkoma, NY called "Healing Touch of a Sista." There's little hints of their proper material in there, most notably the "my addiction" vocal clip from "Your Girl Smells Chung When She Wears Dior" popping up. Shit gets a bit piercing a few times in the piece, as if they were recording this live and planes were actually screeching overhead which makes sense cos according to very quick research we found that Ronkonkoma is home to Long Island MacArthur Airport. Get jet-lagged and check the 24-minute track at Dummy Mag cos like all Hype Williams and/or Inga Copeland shit, it's up on the Soundcloud for a day then it goes away. Also shouts out to the White Pony art mashed up with Bart.

LABOUR

To celebrate his coming to America, Triple You Tapes is proud to present the C Powers Labour CDR, seven tracks recorded over the past 1.5 years and tossed to the internet, only to float back as a compact disc wrapped up in handmade packaging by the beautiful people at UUU. You say you didn't know Mr. Powers was crossing the Atlantic? WELL GET WITH IT -- dude's playing two shows in Brooklyn this weekend, Friday May 27 at 285 Kent with Greatest Hits, Friends and Featureless Ghost (presented by VIBES MGMT), then again Saturday May 28 at Cameo Gallery with Featureless Ghost, Punks On Mars and CH-Rom (presented by Friendship Bracelet Presents...).

Inside Labour we find track after track of hard-hitting hip hop instrumental funk, at times dipping into more psychedelic stretches, at times leaning into a raving house pulse. I've said it before and I'll say it again, C Powers, whether he's solo or with Mane Mane or as his defunct project Termeric, hits right in the dead center in a scatterplot of various musics I get down with and Labour is no different -- drugs-in-the-club bangers for semi-faded weekend warriors who should probably hit the sack except they'd sooner hit the back room, hit the bong and keep on drinking.

Between this release, NEW C Powers material, new Shur material (formerly Shrur) and the prospect of new Mane Mane works, C Powers seems poised to murder the second half of 2011. He's also got his first Mane Mane show lined up, a July 13 date in Stockholm with AyGeeTee. Labour is a FREE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD and if you're feeling particularly saucy this day please do order a CDR from UUU. Check a couple of my favorites then download the whole thing then don't be shy -- BUY ONE!

SEE HOME

Hey there -- two new C Powers (a.k.a. Termeric, 1/2 Mane Mane, 1/3 Shrur/Shur) jammers just uploaded to Soundcloud a couple hours ago. I prefer the second of the two, "See Home," but "Slow Handed" is rad too, perhaps more along the lines of the chopped hip hop and funk that Powers has got us accustomed to. "See Home" rattles on for seven minutes, on the longish side for this project. Reminds me of another one of Powers' longer tracks, "Chunder 2" from his split with Yaaard. This guy's super clean and clubby. I like to imagine that every time one of those little cowbell percussions happens its a small man rapping on a glass with his fork, tryna get some attention except there's 40,000 others tryna do the same thing so that, together, they all sound rather nice and rhythmic. It's great as long as afterwords you don't recall that each and every one of their attention requests actually went unnoticed.

Dig? Well check it out -- C Powers will be making a few appearances in Brooklyn at the end of May with Atlanta brethren Featureless Ghost. Hard dates are Friday May 27 at 285 Kent and Saturday May 28 (FBUS PRESENTS...) with CH-Rom and Punks On Mars at Cameo Gallery. Stay tuned for more info about dates and new C Powers releases.

DOG LEATHER

I didn't hear much about this Dog Leather LP when it was released earlier this year, but I'm getting really into Greezy Man and Stinky Man Meets Smutty Ranks On Tarantula Hill after catching their live show twice in the past month or so, including the other nite opening for Lightning Bolt at 285 Kent.

Dog Leather is the duo of DJ Dog Dick and Sewn Leather, two dudes whose music I am admittedly just vaguely familiar with. The two cover a weird range of brutal noise/junked downtempo hip hop, usually spitting heavily distorted, barely intelligible rhymes about Gorilla Glue, goblins, garbage, ogres and blunts. According to Pictureplane, "These kids aren't trying to be rappers, they are just being themselves" and that's exactly the vibe I get from their live show -- two dudes who like to make a shit-ton of obliterating noise come together to riff on outsider scum life and swallow the audience in the process. In a good way. Like, a few people leave the room with their fingers in their ears but the vast majority are so so drawn to it. Video Evidence.

The best part? Shit's available as a pay-what-you-want download from Ehse Records in addition to 12" LP and CDR. Album centerpiece and general oddball "Do Gleat Her" is available for stream below, but don't let it fool you -- dudes are usually way more intense, like no flutes and Summery hip hop bass grooves. For the noisier stuff, check the rad homemade videos below.

(P.S. "Goblin Massacre" probably isn't a @fucktyler dis but I'm curious to know what he'd think about these dudes)

LOVERS LANE

I met San Francisco's Ivan Mairesse a few Summers ago at the Cambridge, Massachusetts YMCA Theatre. Julian Lynch was playing a set at The Whitehaus Family's huge Weirdstock event and I believe Ivan knew Julian from going to school in Madison, Wisconsin and was somehow ended up playing harmonium along with Julian's clarinet. After the set I talked with Ivan, he mentioned the music he made, I gave him my email. Months later, literally after I had forgotten about him, Ivan hit me with some exceptionally warm, super-intimate four-track demos. These songs, and the bunch that followed, quickly snowballed into Lovers Lane, Ivan's debut full-length for Triple You Tapes (UUU).

Lovers Lane is a collection of 12 songs; some take a leisurely stroll through soft guitar/keys psychedelia, others float through fuzzier ambient waters. This release comes on the heels of a couple SXSW appearances from Ivan Mairesse & His Band, which features two members of Rangers' live band from SXSW 2010. The live act took on a louder, more rock n roll sound (check out a video from the Underwater Peoples SXSW house show below), very good but also very different from the four-track recordings found on Lovers Lane.

Check out downloads of four songs on bandcamp, stream the rest, then BUY A TAPE/CDR. Lovers Lane will be available in digital formats shortly. Sample a couple of my favorites, check that live video and the inside of the insert with tracklist.

NEW BLACK FEVER

That nearly-ten-minute jam up there is new music from Andy Boay, a.k.a. Andy White from Tonstartssbandht. Andy will release Born To Fully, a solo tape under the last name Boay, this Spring on Bruised Tongue.

Speaking of Tonstartssbandht, the brothers Andy + Edwin White are going on tour. TO RUSSIA/UKRAINE. Over here at FBUS, that is very exciting news and we wish them the best. To commemorate the occasion, DŒS ARE will issue a c30 tour-only tape available at those shows or digitally through bandcamp. Check my favorite track from the tape below, then stream the whole thing and check those Russian/Ukrainian dates.

ARDENTINNY

"Some Subcity contributors took one of their favourite bands on a road trip to a small westerly village called Ardentinny. We set off early in a van full of instruments and recording equipment. The skies were clear and blue, it was one of those last days of summer, the temperature getting slightly cooler and the bloom of nature beginning to fade."

To clarify, Subcity Radio is Glasgow University's student radio station and the "favourite band" they are talking about here is Ricky Egan's Glasgow-based recording project Tangles. Last September, some of the Subcity crew drove Ricky and three of his buds out to a few spots in Ardentinny to record a live set outside of doors. Normally Tangles is a solo project, written and recorded by Ricky straight to four-track. However, he brings the songs to life in the live setting with a full band of guitar, bass, drums and synthesizer. The transition to live band leads to a more rock-based product as opposed to the pure ambient warmth documented on his recent tape No Sweat, the Frolixan Said (out now on Triple You Tapes), to fantastic effect.

These dudes have a serious hold on gauzy instrumental bliss, so stream the half hour live set HERE (click the "))listen" button + stream in iTunes) then stream the second side of Tangles' Triple You Tapes release and download "Know More," the tape's single, below.
