FBC5 EXTENSION

I know, I KNOW. I said Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 5 would be available for preorder for TWO WEEKS ONLY before I took down the links. HOWEVER in that time some crazy things have happened and a couple things have changed.

As many of you know, there was a recent burglarizing and ransacking and general invasion plus destruction of amazing Ridgewood, Queens do-it-yourself live music venue The Silent Barn. In my time living in Brooklyn this was probably my favorite place to see music, hang out with cats, check the comics library, see bands play in front of a kitchen sink, conversate in the dark basement, chug down huge outside beers and be with friends. I've probably been there about a dozen times but after my first trip it was evident how special the space was and how much history and future it had. For these reasons, I really felt compelled to make a contribution to Silent Barn's Kickstarter campaign to get the space and all its residents back on their feet.

Unfortunately I have very little money so I can't give from my pocket, but what I can and will do is keep the FBC5 preorder open for JUST ONE MORE WEEK with 50% of all gross revenue from this week going to The Silent Barn (a.k.a. if you buy a tape for $5, I will donate $2.50 to the Silent Barn Kickstarter). If you were thinking about it before and let your chance pass you by, please do reconsider and help out a fantastic live music space while treating yourself to a tape of killer new tunes. Stream the comp from bandcamp (embedded below) then download the comp FOR FREE then check the different giving levels and make a contribution not only to the production of the FBC5 physical product but to The Silent Barn as well. Thanks!

FRIENDSHIP BRACELET CLUB VOLUME 5

So we meet again, Friendship Bracelet Club. Volume 5 comes about 14 months after the last edition, taking a break over the past year or so to give me some time to try to work on Triple You Tapes. However, The Club is a lot of fun so hopefully it'll become a regular feature again.

This time in addition to the free digital download we've got a few different giving levels for physical objects associated with the compilation, taking on a Kickstarter-like form. All this stuff is available now as a pre-order. This time we are gauging how many copies to make STRICTLY ACCORDING TO what we do for pre-orders, so we offer a paypal pre-order button available for TWO WEEKS ONLY, then it will be down and you won't ever be able to order the compilation in physical format. Ever again. All prices appear in United States Dollars and include shipping.

Details on Preferred Packaging Options:

1. Tape Only -- $5.00
(pre-order for the pro-dubbed cassette, will ship within one month) *Unlimited*

Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 5

FREE DOWNLOAD

1. Free Spirit - O'Dela. Super chilled out sunrise guitar jammer from McGregor (Chocolate Bobka + The Curatorial Club) + Jonah (Real Estate, Family Portrait). Their first material on any sort of release, which I am beyond psyched to present.

2. Galapagos - Purrre. Young dude Jacob McNaughton from Arizona. Got this lil skittered electronica going on, first heard him on his Sounds Vol. 1 EP. Moving to Austin for school soon, hopefully studies don't conflict with busting out more tunes.

3. Main Attrakionz - * * * * *

4. Horse Bladder - Chased. Current Northampton, MA resident/poet/musician Elaine Kahn's Horse Bladder project teeters between pristine ambience and jarring low fidelity noise. She throws a monthly poetry reading/live music show at Flying Object in Hadley, MA. Her upcoming LP on Ecstatic Peace (No I'll Not) follows last year's Night People cassette (Nicole).

5. The Cyclist - Feel Beauty. Andrew Morisson is from Derry, Ireland. He crafts "tape throb" as The Cyclist, released his tape Bending Brass on Crash Symbols a few months ago and will drop new tunes on Leaving Records in the near future.

6. Howse - Speak Good. Howse gets down on jukey, blipped-up riddims, ominous samples and generally mind-boggling sonic environments. His first physical release is forthcoming on Astro Nautico.

7. Featureless Ghost - Take It Out (Happy New Year Remix). Eleanor Logan makes tunes as Happy New Year. She's from Australia. She lives in Brooklyn now. Featureless Ghost is Matt Weiner and Elise Tippins from Atlanta. Eleanor took the danced-blasted "Take It Out" original, flipped it, reversed it, and ended up with a real eerie jam. HNY has a 7" out soon and its release party is August 3 at Glasslands in Brooklyn.

8. Rangers - Bus To Chalco. This is Rangers' second time on a Friendship Bracelet Club comp. I'm very down with this outtake from his forthcoming double LP on Not Not Fun, a serious slow-burned open road jam that'll take you so far beyond the horizon you won't know how to get back.

9. Feast of Violet - Hinterland. Feast of Violet is Allen Taylor from Atlanta. He used to play in the band Roman Photos before they disbanded earlier this year. "Hinterland" is a tasty ambient treat for all you nature boys out there.

10. Shur - Silver Lightning. Shur is Matt Weiner (Twins, Featureless Ghost) + Chris Powers (C Powers, Mane Mane) + Charley Lanning (CH-Rom, Wo). Shur was Shrur but now they're Shur and they have a new album out sometime hopefully this year under the new name. Triple You Tapes released the Shrur album 4Shrur earlier this year on cassette, which was generally a lot weirder than this house-y cut.

11. La Big Vic - Musica Pt. 2. A companion piece to La Big Vic's beloved live staple "Musica" but this time we're revved into uptempo Kraut zones and it's sick. Their LP Actually is out now on Underwater Peoples.

12. Tonstartssbandht - Hymn-Eola (Acapella). This is the acapella version of Edwin White's "Hymn-Eola" from their recent Russian tour tape Hymn. Not an extreme distancing from the original but real cool to see what Edwin can do with the vocal effect alone.

*Main Attrakionz track will appear on the physical version only*

TRAMPLE

Berlin blog No Fear Of Pop seems to be the #1 place to turn for Hype Williams-associated updates. Recently they posted a new track from Inga Copeland, a.k.a. the female half of Hype Williams. "Trample" sees Copeland on a serious pop lean, more of a body-bobbing jam, not quite dance-y but certainly less weird than "Can We," posted and then removed from Copeland's Soundcloud a few weeks ago.

The only vocals in "Can We" are a looped, pitched-down voice commanding one to "never look back." On top of this loop Copeland builds increasingly dense accompaniment, from the softest synthesizer tones to police cruiser sirens before dropping the beat and crawling bass line a couple minutes in. "Trample" forgoes the weirdo build-up and heads right for the part of my ear that says "hey if Nite Jewel sounds like a muffled disco held in a bedroom, then this Inga Copeland track sounds like a disco held in that bedroom's walk-in closet" and by that I mean it's even smaller-scale, more hidden, way more faded, for an even more select crowd. And that crowd probably has more drugs.

Inga Copeland - Trample

Inga Copeland - Can We

No idea if/when there will be an Inga Copeland solo record, but there's also this little mixtape to check out, something she did NOT immediately delete from her Soundcloud. The only sounds I recognize in the mix is Felt. The rest is weirder.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #12 - TOBY ARONSON

Burlington, Vermont's Toby Aronson is one of the men behind NNA Tapes, in my opinion one of the best tape labels out. Dudes have released music from the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Caboladies, Nonhorse, Driphouse, Ryan Garbes, Dylan Ettinger, Hubble, Dem Hunger's Wanda Group project and many, many more including an eight-cassette box set of Burlington-local artists. His artistic duties don't end at label-curating -- he is also a creator of fine synthesizer music under his own name and alongside Greg Davis as Harmonizer, sounds ranging from ambient drones to jacked-up shards of noise. In addition to a slew of other SXSW dates, Toby recently played our FBUS X WEIRD MAGIC SXSW show and seriously destroyed.

There's a whole bunch of stuff on the horizon for NNA, including releases by Mist, Laurel Halo, Coppertone and a bunch more I've never heard of but am equally excited to hear. For those of you unfamiliar with the label, Toby's FBFC mix should provide some insight as to what they're all about -- the finest synthetic arpeggiations, spans of gritty noise, space-age prog passageways and beautifully out-there fragments of pop. Toby's also got a couple tapes out soon, including one for Digitalis and a split with Greg Davis on Bathetic. A couple new Harmonizer releases are also on the way.

CLAMS CASINO

Clams Casino dropped an "instrumental mixtape" yesterday (via), highlighting some tracks he's produced in the past for rappers like Lil B, Soulja Boy and Main Attrakionz dude Squadda B. Clams Casino must be most well known for his production of Lil B's "I'm God," but there's a lot of promising stuff here.

Recently, Clams produced a couple tracks on Squadda B's I Smoke Because I Don't Care About Death mixtape, "Fakest Year Ever" and the first third of "Kissin On My Syrup." This was when I first started taking notice. Yeah, like a month ago. Yeah, I know - "I'm God" is from 2009. But you don't always hear a producers name (unless your watermark is mad apparent like Lex Luger's), and that's one little detail I've been digging about the Green Ova crew and the Odd Future crew. They're super forthright with which one of their guys produced the track. They want everyone to get the credit they deserve. You open that file in your iTunes and all the information is laid out in front of you in the track name section. I feel that.

Anyway. I don't think I've heard any of these mixtape tracks with the vocals over them at all, which is kind of nice cos trying to imagine vocals here is tough. The arrangements are so nice and pristine, its hard to imagine what Lil B's mouth would do here. The air is void of "swag" and void of "woo" and void of threats to "fuck your bitch." These are melancholic times for up and coming rap producers, apparently. Lucky for Clams, he's got a nice little niche of slightly-darker flows to handle.

Check out a couple sample instrumentals (including one track that's in the Sendspace download that is completely unnamed but bangs louder than any of the other tracks) then download the whole mixtape.

Clams Casino - I'm Official (Squadda B)

Clams Casino - Brainwash By London (The Jealous Guys)

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #11 - SILK FLOWERS

Silk Flowers' killer LTD. Form LP was released earlier this month on PPM. I liked it so much I asked Avi if the band would make a guest mix for the ongoing Friendship Bracelet Friendship Club series. They did, and as expected it's a solid, nearly hour-long mix of dissonant rhythms, new age discos, casual dance music and darker shades of synth-pop. The band also let me post whatever song from the LP I wanted. I went with "Frozen Moments," which was recently remixed by Nite Jewel. I dig the original a bit more - it's darker and certainly weirder, no vocals for the music to shrink behind. Check out "Frozen Moments," then the mix, then the other tracks under the tracklist as well.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #10 - AYGEETEE

Andrew Gideon Thomson, currently known to the sonic world as AyGeeTee (formerly AGT), has been under the Friendship Bracelet's super-radar for what seems like at least a year. (probably more like eight to ten months, so about five years' internet time). The royal We dug the Londoner's blending of hardboiled glitch-beat and wavering ambient passages, enough so for .us to "induct" him into the Friendship Club with an FBFC mix, the tenth such mix to date.

Dude's also responsible for fuckin up my header.

AyGeeTee has his first couple releases out soon, a c40 on Sweat Lodge Guru due next month and an EP for AMDISCS sometime in the near future. No Fear In Pop posted an extract from the B-side, "Screaming Glow," and down below you can download an extract from the A-side, "Talking Burd." (extract meaning a bunch of pieces surgically removed from each long track, mixed together into a mini-summary/mini-Frankenstein).

Also stream "Thread," from the as-yet-untitled AMDISCS EP.

ALSO dude remixed The XX late last year ["so I took out every element of the original track (except one 1/2 second sample warped & pitched up & down) & it sounded much betta than before, so I added guitars and more synths n shit &... here we are"]

As for the mix, Andrew outdid himself on this one, producing two "sides" of a single digital mixtape. Bits and pieces of songs woven in and out of grooves from others, making for a wild 85-minute ride. For real though - he crammed a whole bunch of shit in there. Check the tracklists, though sometimes it's hard to tell when one piece ends and the next begins. It'll be a fine Monday treat for all the office team out there.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #9 - LOW LOG

Ida Jane Griesemer is a young writer, curator, photographer and Brooklyn resident who runs submissions-centric literary/art website Low Log with her good friend and roommate Michael Pollock. The communal aspect is what attracted me to the site in the first place. All LowLog asks is for "greatness," which you indeed possess since you read these fine pages so why not submit a work?

"Our content is not limited to any genre, medium, topic, or style," reads their 'About' section. This sentiment rings true throughout - a cursory glance reveals a two-part short story called "Boris Diaw and the Infinite Sadness" (that's right, the French NBA player and a Smashing Pumpkins reference), paintings, poetry, collages, interviews and music. Oh, and they also threw a rad show/party at their apartment, dubbed The Low Loft.

Low Log has slowed a bit as of late, but is working to amend that. The two are organizing another event, this time composed of readings and a visual art showing instead of bands and "comedy." CLICK HERE to find out more about the current state of Low Log and click the link below to download the ninth edition of the Friendship Bracelet Friendship Club guest mix series, which has recently been revitalized after a few months on the down-low.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #8 - ASTRO NAUTICO

For this edition of the Friendship Bracelet Friendship Club I am proud to present three separate mixes from each of the three members of the Astro Nautico crew, a.k.a. Kuhn, Obey City and Paul Jones. The dudes are active in Brooklyn gettin on their DJ set shit every other week at Cameo Gallery for their Over the Top nite ("fresh mixes every time, drink specials, big crowd, deep sensations").

Paul Jones a.k.a. Paolo brings you the third and final installment of FBFC#8, a heavy assortment of jams and violent voice-overs. His FAT DUDES tumblr is a favorite of mine and I'm curious to see what his +++WEED identity will do next after his couple jams on Astro Nautico's Atlantics EP.

The dudes are active in Brooklyn gettin on their DJ set shit every other week at Cameo Gallery for their Over the Top nite ("fresh mixes every time, drink specials, big crowd, deep sensations").

The first excellent mix comes from Kuhn, about which he had this to say:

"i put this mix together to sample a bunch of different ways that 'eastern' jamz have been appropriated in the beat musics of today and yesteryear... it's full of sounds from arabic, turkish, persian, indian and balkan music, most of which appear as the artists sampled them, and others of which i mashed over the tracks. originally i wanted to mix 1001 songs, but that turned into 'rock the casbah' on repeat. i pruned it down to 18 mins. goes excellent with a summer night."

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #6 - TONSTARTSSBANDHT

The sixth edition of Friendship Bracelet's Friendship Club has been floating around for a bit now, finally receiving proper attention to post up. Edwin from Tonstartssbandht/DŒS ARE sent over this mix a while ago. It's actually recorded from the radio, a set he played on his CKUT 90.3FM show on February 2. Huge mix of weird pop transmissions including some of his own music, his label's music and side project music.

The band is currently mixing their new full-length, which doesn't have a release date or label yet. Their two albums from last year, An When and Dick Nights, were both on high rotation around here and I had the pleasure of featuring a demo version of their song "Black Country" on Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 2. Edwin is also currently working on a new solo tape.

DŒS ARE recently released Cool World's Gaydream Nation, which I must say is great. You can check some demos from that HERE and some new versions/new tracks HERE.

DEEP AS LOVE

So a couple weeks ago, for whatever reason (bored at work), I suggested my #1 radio fan/requestor clean up a Lisa Frank-inspired mix she had made in response to previous prodding. I'm glad I feigned toughness and jerkiness because she did in fact produce a splendid mix of cute pop candy. It's great, you should check it out.

Anyway, the grounds of the suggestion were basically that I would put forth a counter-mix to end all fake-mix-beefs. This gave me good reason to dust off like 55% of a mix I had fooled around with months before but neglected, leaving it to collect dust and wonder if it would ever be tampered with again. Finally, after way too long, these songs have been arranged just right.

There's no real single source for this mix's inspiration -- one part early MTV memories, one part DJ Darmok vibes, one part escapism into a dream world where one can be as smooth as their wildest dreams paint them. But most of all the mix stands in response to all the girly pop found on the all-female-fronted Lisa Frank mix. While a bunch of those older songs seem to be lost in some vintage void where wives and girlfriends wait patiently for their husbands and boyfriends to return from a day on the job, the songs found here are songs performed by men, or groups of men, with the sole purpose of selling records to these same swooning women.

The decades have changed, but the same sentiment rings true - the consumer wants to hear a pop song that affords them the opportunity to imagine what it'd be like, even if just for the duration of the tune, to be the one who these songs were written for. Heterosexual men (primarily) want to imagine The Angels are singing about them when they harmonize like "ba-ba-ba-oooh" just like men fantasize about what it'd be like to be one of those male models in a golden age Mariah Carey/Janet Jackson video that they're fretting over/falling for.

The songs on this mix take on the other end of the binary, providing pop fantasy fodder for (primarily) heterosexual women to gush over. What if my body was the body that was calling to R Kelly? What if Silk wanted to freak me? What if Roger Troutman wanted to be my man?

Marketing ploys aside, these songs provide a very, very small peek into some of my favorite R&B/soul songs from the late 70s to the mid 90s. There's some truly sensual excursions into soul, enough R&B cheese to rot your teeth and tons of blood-boiling sexual imagery (obviously).

It is with a strange amount of pleasure that Friendship Bracelet presense Deep as Love: A Mix for Midnite. Turn down the lights and shut the blinds - it's going to be a long nite.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #5 - PERDIZES DREAM

It's been a bit of a delay, but here's the fifth edition of the Friendship Bracelet Friendship Club, curated by Brazilian label Perdizes Dream.

PD's Claudio got the name from the west-side neighborhood in São Paulo where he resides, Perdizes ("it's a little bit like Brooklyn in NYC"). The label has brought us two releases from Brazilian artists thus far, Babe, Terror's Weekend and the self-titled Buon Griorno Luamada album, with more to come very soon from those two acts. This mix is full of continents-spanning psych, all fantastic. In their own words:

"In a changing-dial (more than mixtape) way, I tried to show the synthesis and spirit of a very particular Brazilian "barroquedelia," developed by the Clube da Esquina "scene" of the state of Minas Gerais (Minas is something like the Brazilian mix of Wyoming and Pennsylvania) in the 70's, and detect links between those sounds and other stuff. Like "classic" (which is in fact very modern in my view) collective/psychedelic rock made, mostly, in Scandinavia nowadays, Guilherme Arantes (who's a genius, our perfect mix of Todd Rundgren, Tony Banks, Billy Joel and Cole Porter, the greatest composer of Brazilian "X" and untold history -- he was born/ raised in São Paulo, near Perdizes), Italian prog, etc."

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #4 - MASSTROPICAS

Michael Pigott is a fellow Pittsfield, MA resident who runs the small Americas-spanning label MASSTROPICAS (who brought you that El Hombre Orquesta tape which, by the way, is still available through the OESB Shoppe).

I first met Mike around when his awesome Green Mansions LP dropped last year. I went over his house, picked up a copy and listened to him play records for like an hour. Joe Meek and Black Randy and Peruvian records I had never dreamt of. This mix is culled from his immense collection of LPs and 45s, all vinyl rips of mostly bubblegum and exotica and weird pop I've never heard before. I urge you to listen to the whole thing, it's truly fantastic. Especially the Sensations Fix track. Shit's killer.

Green Mansions is Mike's collaboration with Peter Bonneman. Look out for some more of their music to be released sometime soon, as well as some live performances this summer. Sample some of those jams HERE.

I recently asked frequent e-aquaintance William Cody Watson a.k.a. Pink Priest to hit me with a little guest mix for Friendship Bracelet's fledgling FRIENDSHIP BRACELET FRIENDSHIP CLUB feature. His mix was fantastic, and right around then he asked me to hit him back with a mix on the more ambient side of things for posting on his new ambient mix blog simply titled + | +.

I obliged, finished the mix before traveling to SXSW and it has been posted up all proper-like today. Click the link below to drown yourself in cigarettes and honey.

FRIENDSHIP CLUB #3 - HOW TO DRESS WELL

Here's the third edition of the FRIENDSHIP CLUB here on FBUS, a series of guest-curated mixes worked out by carefully selected individuals for us all to enjoy while on our grind.

This week's jams are brought to you by How To Dress Well. Been following this gentleman for a while now (and now you can follow him too, get it?) and have been thoroughly amazed by his half dozen 3" CD-Rs/free digital downloads, so much so that I asked him to contribute a track to the last Friendship Bracelet Club compilation.

By now you might know what to expect - dude's been tip-toeing the line between thick terror pieces (see the Xiu Xiu below), spacious tundra-scapes (see the Current 93 into Grouper below) and sensual R&B (see just about everything else). The combination is really natural for whatever reason, as evidenced by this mix.

I've got to say, seriously listen up for that "Money To Blow" edit.
