OUTER LIMITS
I know everyone's all up on the SLEEP ∞ OVER and everything, but I thought it necessary to reiterate how much I like the two songs that grace their 7" on Forest Family, currently up for preorder.
Both songs, "Outer Limits" and "La Rose," are late-nite drifters, drowsily revealing themselves through fog machine mist. The former takes on more of a sleepy disco nod, while the latter crosses over into some swirling slow-dance territory. What I'm trying to say is neither of these songs would be out of place blaring over the PA of your dreamscape flashback to high school promenade, makeshift luxuries that warm like liquor.
Check out their Tumblr for visual accompaniment and if you're in southern California this weekend, see them play with Pure Ecstasy among others.

BEN BUTLER & MOUSEPAD
Shone sum lite on Ben Butler & Mousepad last week cos my boy Tangles remixed one of his joints. Digging deeper we find BB&MP's Soundcloud page, ripe with remixes and originals to download and stream. Couple of my favorites are the downloadable ones, his remix of Kavinsky's "Nightcall" and "Hum Ghar Sahan," which I assume is an original production.
Dude turns Kavinsky's original from a slow-driving roll thru high-beamed backroads into a banging strobe of flicked lighters and flashing bulbs. He focuses on cutting up the chorus, forgoes dealing much with the vocoder verses and out pops a sultry groove with all the right snaps.
"Hum Ghar Sahan" is what the Soundcloud calls a 'Bollywood Synth' track. Shit bounces all spongey, real uplifting and addictive.
SIDENOTE: Ended up lookin to see what else I could find under the tag 'Bollywood Synth' and found some nice lil record dug up from 1982 called Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat by Charanjit Singh. Stream sounds from that HERE then BUY IT.
Oh, and I can't forget his "Love Lockdown" remix, which I really dig.
Peep all these samples, then grab more at SOUNDCLOUD and BANDCAMP.

DJ NATE
Trust me, I'm not up on my underground dance genres.
Fast forward to when I first heard DJ Nate's "Make Em Run." I flipped on how frenetic it is. Turns out it's with good reason - shit's meant to get yer feet moving faster than the speed of light, hence the name Footwork. It's dark, drugged and hard, beating your body into nodding submission.
Not exactly sure what sets DJ Nate apart from other Footwork DJs, but he's got an EP out soon on Planet Mu, Hatas Our Motivation, which you can stream HERE. Seems like he's also got a compilation of Footwork Tracks out soon on the same label, which assuredly features a ton of the songs you can find on Youtube.

SESAME STREET BANDAIDS 07/26/10
This evening DJ Darmok and myself, DJ Beer With Dinner, will return with yet another edition of SESAME STREET BANDAIDS, airing from 5:30-8PM EST on WMUA 91.1FM and streaming from wmua.org.
Nearly every week for the good part of 2010, a certain somebody has made an effort to check out the program and call/tweet/gchat in requests. Her choices revolve around modern and vintage Californian and psychedelic pop (as well as last week's "Return of the Mack" jammer) and they're never bad songs, so I figure hey why not have this gal let all you know why she picked these songs each week? This feature is well deserved - it's entirely possible she thinks about these requests harder than I think about the other 98% of my half of the show. Here's her lil intro to our new weekly featurette (her email to me copy and pasted) plus this week's request:
"Well, since this is my first post, I feel that I need to address it rather than just assume you know what the hell is going on cause that is just kinda rude. So, hi, I’m Marissa. Aside from blogging about myself, I am also a regular requester on Sesame Street Bandaids which brings us here today. I guess I was impressive enough to warrant a weekly column and I am very honored to be here! It feels a lot like getting invited into a club, which has never happened to me so actually I don’t know first hand but I’m guessing my heart would feel this warm & fuzzy. I did once start my own joke club in second grade but only first graders came so I had to call that shit quits. Wasn’t good for my personal brand, ya know?
This week, I decided to request something that really represented me and my lifestyle. I wanted something that not only reflected my personality but also my ideology. From wine for breakfast to the chorus that has become my life’s mantra (as well as a main argument for combating against asshole commenters, it’s like, dude, if my shit does not bring you pleasure by all means, go read something that makes
you happy, you self loathing little shit, AMIRITE OR AMIRITE?!), Donovan’s Museum fits that bill pretty damn well.
Museum is on the B-Side of 1967’s Mellow Yellow, which is by far the best Donovan album of all time in my opinion and I can see how a lot of people may assume that is because of the title track but the whole album is bombcom. I mean, I spent a lot of time getting stoned, skipping classes & listening to this bro’s entire discography so I mean, I’m kind of an expert. It’s like dude, Sunny South Kensington?
PLEASE. DONE&DONE RIGHT THURRR.
If you don’t have this album, first of all, get real & secondly, get it. There’s a Mellow Yellow + Wear Your Love Like Heaven like double disk CD so I’m sure you can download that 4 double the pleasure somewhere. Totally worth it.
Alright guys, nice meeting you & see you next Monday. Same time, same place like TGIFridays in the ‘90s. #mmmunclejesse "

TEMPT FADE
Last week Evan from Top Girls sent over Persona La Ave's remix of their song "Faded Feeling" from the Attraction EP. He says it's "groovier," which I suppose is true, but mainly I like how said groove is held off on for a minute and a half in favor of disembodied murmurs, some Davy Jones' Locker shipwrecked ghost shit.

TANGLES
Up until recently, I had no idea. That's right - I hadn't figured it out on my own. Glaswegian artist Tangles' music project is "pretty much dedicated to" Jean Claude Van Damme, through and through.
Take note: A song called "Round House." A video comprised of JCVD clips. Myspace about me section?
"in rememberance of roundhouse kick's past"
I can't imagine Tangles soundtracking a martial arts showdown flick. Or Time Cop. I can, however, imagine JCVD alone in the lockerroom in 1979 before his fight with Rolf Risberg, headphones on, tuning out to Tangles on one of the first ever Walkman Personal Stereos imported from Japan. He's in the zone. He's relaxed. He wins in a single round knockout to improve to 10-0.
Tangles' Sweet Jams c30 on Leftist Nautical Antiques seems to still be available. His song "Cruisin" appeared on Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 4 and he will drop another tape on Triple You Tapes later this year. Check out a couple samples, plus his remix of Ben Butler and Mousepad's "Future Tent."

Soft Gates is Berk from I Create Soundscapes. This project takes the starshine of ICS and concentrates it down to a nearly comprehensible size. Like a monolithic marble that resembles our blue Earth.

WHY WON'T YOU HAVE ME
Byrds of Paradise's 7" on Vivian Girls' Wild World Records is finally out, featuring new versions of "Kids In the Hall" and "Rowena." This comes right on the heels of their "Omega Man" 7" on Don Giovanni. Grab the 7" version of "Kids In the Hall" below, check the nearly disorienting video, then buy one 7" then buy the other. Oh, and there's still some Hearts of Palm tapes available - just $5 - click the sidebar.

JESUS SEASHELL
Jesus Seashell makes pulsations to soundtrack the bleak.
I imagine "Homeless" following a down-trodden soul through rough life on the streets - paperbagged liquor, shopping cart rust, hooligan abuse. His suit is torn, he can't find work, his family is dead. Then, right as the darkest hour approaches, the pounding ceases (~2:20) and our hero finds salvation a wrongfully discarded scratch ticket and he's a bone-thin millionaire. He's rich, but has nothing to live for.
I imagine "Life" strobing across sound-surrounded eardrums as the camera pans slow motion over an olympic stadium track. Our hero runs like the wind for laps upon laps, black and white frames inching along as he approaches the finish line, dozens of meters ahead of the competition. The announcers cue his country's national anthem as he breaks the yellow tape and looks at the cheering crowd in approval. Suddenly (~4:20), in mid-celebratory stride, the distance runner crumples in front of thousands as he suffers a life-altering stroke. He's forever a champion, but his memory is destroyed.

VIRGIN SPRING
Party Trash/Clearing + Pink Priest = Virgin Spirit
"The music is inspired by electronic goop, sliced up cassette tape cadavers, severely screwed hip-hop, disintegrating horror movie scores, Satanic possession loops, real gritty, grimy, evil shit..."
"We're working on a lot of material"
"We'll be dropping a couple promotional mixtapes in the coming days too..."
Virgin Spirit - 2

THIS PROJECT WAS CALLED VIRGIN SPRING. IT IS NOW CALLED VIRGIN SPIRIT.
I WANA FEEL IT
matthewdavid turned me on to Jon Wayne through his remix of "Feel It" (a party complete with Tiesto and Three Six Mafia and Sean Kingston and Flo Rida?). Interest officially crystallized after cruising through his Paranoia collage for Leaving and learning he's got a 7" out soon on Stones Throw.
The remix takes Tiesto's endless booze and booty anthem into a slightly different venue. There's still ladies, there's still dozens of Patron shots to go around, but this remix is made for the not-so-high profile. Sure, Three Six can get away with pulling on blunts in the club, but the rest of yall gotta retire to a houseparty or a dim living room or a back alley. This is where memories of the club go to die, bathed in plumes of smoke. Everything is chopped, everyone is screwed and minds are hypnotized. Neighbors roll over in bed, pressing pillows to ears.

CONSOLE COWBOYS
I've heard Laurel Halo whirring around in my head for a few weeks, just about as often as this image creeps to the front of my brain. She's recently remixed How To Dress Well, just released a video for "Embassy" and has made her King Felix EP available for free download.
Obscuring fog surrounds her music. Steam accumulates thick on backseat windows rich with oil-puddle coloration. Figures on the outside become more and more difficult to make out. Figures on the inside become easier and easier to lust over.
In other words, she touches on every sugary (no, not the "insubstantial
or passive" type of sugary) point across the spectrum of soft pop - something like Nite Jewel for when it's too late to dance, How To Dress Well atmospheres minus the Gorgoroth. One look at all her visuals and you already know what I mean.

TOUCHED
Blondes' Touched EP finally dropped on Merok, finally cos it's been nearly a year since I first heard "Spanish Fly." Touched is nearly an LP's length of sensual space music, sounds to fill the gap between close-quartered bodies. From the first minute your shirt is soaked through.
The label sums it up concisely:
'Melding assorted influences ranging from acid techno to new age to Top 40 into a personal dance vision, its 40 minutes offer an exploration of euphoria, intuition, and emotion at their most purified. Equally at home in a sweaty basement party or a solo 6 AM drive thinking "where did it all go so right"'

WETTER
Persona La Ave sent over a demo of new jam "Murtis Cayfield," originally built off of the sultry piano tone of "Wayne On Me" from Lil Wayne's 2009 No Ceilings mixtape, which uses the instrumental of Twista's slow jam "Wetter," which in turn cops elements from Janet's even sultrier "Any Time, Any Place."
PLA furthers the sexual idea of his slow-jam predecessors, this time upping the tempo before climax on some piston-pumped thrust shit.
This track will not appear on PLA's upcoming Brothers Was Taken cassette, out soon on UUU Tapes, but you can check out a free three-song sampler from the tape at Bandcamp and grab GOBBLE GOBBLE'S remix of "Beach 2" (a slowed down version of "Beach 1") below.
