IMBUE UP

I first heard word of Pressed And a couple weeks ago cos they were playing some shows with Cc and Featureless Ghost. Just heard their Imbue Up tape for the first time, available for stream/download from Crash Symbols' bandcamp (and as of this moment, there's a single physical copy remaining). Opening track "Fire Shelf" was remixed by Ra Cailum and then Tragik (whoever that is) rapped over it and there is a video down there and it's a sexy one.

SHE HEAT

Check a new self-directed video from Piotr Kurek for the song "She" from his recent Digitalis Ltd tape Heat. Kurek is from Warsaw and is the leading member of the project Pietnastka and until he emailed me earlier today I hadn't heard his music but it's all fantastic cosmic rumbling and weird meditative Kraut. BLUE POP

Leaving Records' 18th release will be the long-awaited Resolutions cassette by EMV, available in physical and digital formats February 21. Leaving Records has given me the go-ahead to post a couple of my favorite tracks from the tape. I've decided to present two distinct faces of EMV. The first is "Foodborne," quite grimy and driven by a hazy beat sure to enjoy the company of a weedsmoke plume. The second, "Blue Pop (Popped)," shows off EMV's taste for groaning and gritty yet contemplative ambience. Throughout Resolutions the motifs of stoned percussion and ambient cloud meandering intersect often, making for a vast and unsettling slice of advanced beat music/sound collage.

AIR CLIP

Termeric was a project of Chris Powers, a.k.a. C Powers (currently going by Cc). Termeric is now defunct. Released nearly 1.5 years ago on Triple You Tapes, Natural Gel is the only official Termeric collection. Consisting of eight down-tempo psychedelic slappers, sounds range from vintage rasta riddims to modern day beat music, chopped and blended together to create fantastic five-to-six-minute excursions into smoldering weedhaze territories. The entire tape can now be streamed at bandcamp and a few copies are still left for purchase.

Triple You has finally revealed another outtake from Natural Gel, the first since "Get Come Down" from the label's inaugural sampler. “Air Clip (dub)” is a sure trance-inducer, a circular slice of bouncing juke-isms that learned to bang in a muffled and aquatic kind of way. VACATION #2

In addition to the Branches cassette featured in the previous post, Triple You Tapes also dropped Green Mansions' Vacation #2 today. Green Mansions is the transatlantic recording project of Michael Pigott (Pittsfield, Massachusetts) and Peter Bonneman (Denmark). This is their second release, following 2009's self-released four-track 12". A 7" single with new material is due in a couple weeks.

Green Mansions creates soothing, tropical music out of Suicide organ sounds and authentic Latin percussion filled out with minimal guitar and bass. The songs range from decaying ambient drones to light-hearted pop repetition, very easy to flip the tape over and over again. PRIMEIRA VEZ

Excited to announce Triple You Tapes' release of new Branches tape Primeira Vez, now available as a free digital download to sample before purchasing the limited physical edition. Branches is Pedro Rios, a Portuguese musician who's been exploring earthy drones, bubbling pop and ambient rippling since last year's self-released Alto Astral. The two Twins tracks are rad, very much unlike the ecstatic new Featureless Ghost track but still very psychedelic and futuristic. QUICKSAILS

Some of the most exciting ambient flutterings I've heard lately come from Chicago's Ben Billington a.k.a. Quicksails. I caught word of Ben through friends who were trying to land him a show in Western Massachusetts. They succeeded. His set at Flying Object was incredible and loud, blowing the lid off what I thought a Quicksails set might sound like. After learning that a Quicksails live set is much different from a Quicksails recording, Ben mentioned he had a cassette out on NNA Tapes that I didn't know about called A Fantasy in Seasons. You should buy one. No idea what Soundcloud tracks are from the tape (if any), but the homie Mary Katherine Youngblood posted "Walking Through Rain" for stream over at Visitation Rites.

TRAGEDY

Feel like such a dorkus for passing over these three recent Jesselisa Moretti clips for Leaving Records associates Julia Holter, Sumsun and Speculator. The three are all very different, Holter's teetering between chaos and zen, Sumsun's being a wild collaboration with Miko Revereza and Speculator's playing out like a goofy Saturday morning cartoon bump complete with what I believe to be cereal. For those keeping track, Speculator's Nice LP is out now on Underwater Peoples and Sumsun's Samo Milagro tape has been out on Leaving for a while. Holter's Tragedy is available on vinyl record from Leaving with sleeve designed by Moretti. The second pressing of 500 ships next week.

THE GARMENT DISTRICT

New Night People batch features some familiar sounds like those from Taterbug and Sore Eros but has also introduced me to some serious high quality jams from acts I'd heard much less from like Hot & Cold, German Army and The Garment District.

So far my favorite of the bunch is Melody Elder by The Garment District, a project of Pittsburgh-based Jennifer Baron who some might recognize as a founding member of The Ladybug Transistor. The whole tape takes its time, seems to draw its speed from the pace of an every day life viscous with obligations, exercise and rest. The highlight is the third track "Bird Or Bat," in which Baron tones things down even more while letting loose a stream of pierced harmonies. Sounds of a sorrow sort but, like I said, an everyday feeling persists throughout which at once quells any chance of bummer trauma while simultaneously bumming one out from all the bubble life sonic themes.

ORANGE MILK

Orange Milk Records messaged me yesterday about three new tapes that they just dropped, a Quilt/Developer split, Sundrips' One Hundred Hints and Omnicron Girls by Piper Spray. The sample from Quilt's side of the split, "Yes Collapse," is a serious celestial overload while "Omnicron Girls," the title track from the Piper Spray cassette, propels itself along completely submerged. Orange Milk also has releases on the way from Caboladies, Mark Dwinnel (Forma) and La Big Vic. Label heads Seth (Quilt) and Keith (Giant Claw) also have a new project called Cream Juice. They just finished their first record.

SPECIALIST MORGEN J

It's been quite a while since I've posted about Specialist Morgen J, but his self-titled cassette is about to drop on Triple You Tapes. SMJ is Pittsburgh resident Kenny Rakatine. He likes wrestling and Lil Wayne and King of the Hill. No really, two of his new songs are "DDT" and "Souphanousinphone." Specialist Morgen J is full of downtempo synthesizer jams, a deep string of Cloud Rap instrumentals and drugged up club tracks stitched together with extended swaths of spectral ambience. Simply put, SMJ creates dark sounds - subterranean night music for land-dwellers and day-jobbers, a soundtrack to feeling out of bounds and uneasy without steady ground to clamp onto. NNA Tapes officially got into releasing vinyl records this past spring with the Magnified Palette 12" from Diamond Catalog, a.k.a. Hubbard, Oregon's Lala Conchita R. and Pat Maherr (a.k.a. DJ Yo Yo Dieting, a.k.a. Indignant Senility, etc). The duo craft a dark version of dance music blurred to obscurity behind chugging electronics and haunted whizzes of noise, crossing way more into danceable territories on this years record than on their last tape We Are 138BPM. Now NNA is set to release their second slice of vinyl, Innercity's "Dada Les Apocalypses" / "The Pyramids Of Northeast Belgium" 7" on August 29. Innercity is Hans Dens from Belgium. He has releases on labels like Not Not Fun and Upstairs CDR, though I have heard none of his previous work. "The Pyramids Of Northeast Belgium" melds tinkling electronics, new age swells and distant house propulsion into a soothing yet alien take on mutant psychedelia.

Branches has a new video for a new song, "Maior é o Tombo," available as a free download from his bandcamp and as a part of 20 Anos de Ruptura Explosiva, an all-Portuguese tribute compilation to 1991 Keanu Reeves + Patrick Swayze flick Point Break. The video was edited by Branches using material from Homer Groening's 1964 short film A Study in Wet. Branches' Triple You Tapes release Primeira Vez is on the horizon and we'll have more information on that soon. FBC5 EXTENSION

I know, I KNOW. I said Friendship Bracelet Club Volume 5 would be available for preorder for TWO WEEKS ONLY before I took down the links. HOWEVER in that time some crazy things have happened and a couple things have changed.

As many of you know, there was a recent burglarizing and ransacking and general invasion plus destruction of amazing Ridgewood, Queens do-it-yourself live music venue The Silent Barn. In my time living in Brooklyn this was probably my favorite place to see music, hang out with cats, check the comics library, see bands play in front of a kitchen sink, conversate in the dark basement, chug down huge outside beers and be with friends. I've probably been there about a dozen times but after my first trip it was evident how special the space was and how much history and future it had. For these reasons, I really felt compelled to make a contribution to Silent Barn's Kickstarter campaign to get the space and all its residents back on their feet.

On July 26 Leaving Records will release SWEDISH FISH, a split cassette of ambient music from Odd Nosdam (co-founder Anticon Records) and LR guru Matthewdavid. Most of the A-side is "Swedish Tapes," a live recording of Odd Nosdam opening for Fennesz at San Francisco's Swedish-American Hall. The B-side is Matthewdavid's, featuring four extended droners including "Reunited," a wispy piece of mulched tape which has received Miko Revereza's psychedelic analog visual treatment. This time Revereza pairs the sounds with a rotating wheel of rainbow colors that'll make you start seeing things if you stare long enough. As with most all of Revereza's work we see him manipulating raw film, but this time he chose to forge the edit in real time along with the music, bringing the audio and the visual closer in a couple ways. For one, according to Revereza, Matthewdavid edits some of his dronier material in real time, analogous to how the visuals were created. Miko goes a step further, likening the open-ended nature of his abstract video feedback to ambient music in general. "Just like ambient music [the video] is not the kind of thing to make one feel happy or sad or to give an opinion," which allows viewers "to experience the film as an individual." 4. Horse Bladder - Chased. Current Northampton, MA resident/poet/musician Elaine Kahn's Horse Bladder project teeters between pristine ambience and jarring low fidelity noise. 5. The Cyclist - Feel Beauty. Andrew Morisson is from Derry, Ireland. He crafts "tape throb" as The Cyclist, released his tape Bending Brass on Crash Symbols a few months ago and will drop new tunes on Leaving Records in the near future.

6. Howse - Speak Good. Howse gets down on jukey, blipped-up riddims, ominous samples and generally mind-boggling sonic environments. His first physical release is forthcoming on Astro Nautico.

7. Featureless Ghost - Take It Out (Happy New Year Remix). Eleanor Logan makes tunes as Happy New Year. She's from Australia. She lives in Brooklyn now. Featureless Ghost is Matt Weiner and Elise Tippins from Atlanta. Eleanor took the danced-blasted "Take It Out" original, flipped it, reversed it, and ended up with a real eerie jam. HNY has a 7" out soon and its release party is August 3 at Glasslands in Brooklyn.

8. Rangers - Bus To Chalco. This is Rangers' second time on a Friendship Bracelet Club comp. I'm very down with this outtake from his forthcoming double LP on Not Not Fun, a serious slow-burned open road jam that'll take you so far beyond the horizon you won't know how to get back.

9. Feast of Violet - Hinterland. Feast of Violet is Allen Taylor from Atlanta. He used to play in the band Roman Photos before they disbanded earlier this year. "Hinterland" is a tasty ambient treat for all you nature boys out there.

10. Shur - Silver Lightning. Shur is Matt Weiner (Twins, Featureless Ghost) + Chris Powers (C Powers, Mane Mane) + Charley Lanning (CH-Rom, Wo). Shur was Shrur but now they're Shur and they have a new album out sometime hopefully this year under the new name. Triple You Tapes released the Shrur album 4Shrur earlier this year on cassette, which was generally a lot weirder than this house-y cut.

11. La Big Vic - Musica Pt. 2. A companion piece to La Big Vic's beloved live staple "Musica" but this time we're revved into uptempo Kraut zones and it's sick. Their LP Actually is out now on Underwater Peoples.

12. Tonstartssbandht - Hymn-Eola (Acapella). This is the acapella version of Edwin White's "Hymn-Eola" from their recent Russian tour tape Hymn. Not an extreme distancing from the original but real cool to see what Edwin can do with the vocal effect alone.
